UK Police Replace Imprezas With New Lexus IS-F

Objects you do not want to see in your rear-view mirror: Hungry dinosaurs, pissed-off exes holding rifles, mushroom clouds and this guy. Indeed, you're looking at a Lexus IS-Force, an IS-F that's been converted to a cruiser for police duty in the English county of Humberside, which includes the notoriously criminally minded port city of Hull. For the past few years, Humberside bobbies have been chasing baddies in Subaru Imprezas, but the AWD cars just weren't up to the task at hand. What to replace 'em with? Here's what the cops were thinking, according to Sergeant Mike Peck:

"The Lexus was tested during a 12-month period along with similar vehicles and proved itself to be ideally suited in providing a dynamically safe high performance chassis along with an electronically stable platform for the computer equipment. In the past this equipment has placed huge demands on vehicles but the Lexus IS-F easily met with our requirements. The final product provides a most formidable package and is undoubtedly one of the most advanced police vehicles in the world which in turn enables my officers to deal with the criminals who use the roads for serious and organized crime."

Well, not quite extras, because if you know the Lexus brand well enough, they rarely come with an options list, as all the trick stuff is fitted as standard kit. It’s one of the brand’s main selling points, apart from the near faultless reliability and subsequent cost of ownership. These options include on-board computers and communications equipment.
However, Lexus produce mostly soft luxury cars don’t they? Mostly.
But this is the Lexus IS-F, powered by a 5-litre V8 engine, which has been specially tuned to deliver blistering acceleration and a top speed of 270km/h.

Taking the Risk Out of Buying a Used Car

Used Cars. A simple term that has a less than positive meaning for most car buyers. Conventional wisdom says that buying a used car is buying someone else’s problems. However, as new car quality has gone up, the risk of buying a late model used car has gone down. In fact, the automotive industry doesn’t even call them used cars anymore. The term to look for now is Certified Pre-Owned, or CPO.
“There is a growing market in this country for used vehicles that have been put through a Certified Pre-Owned program. CPO vehicles give the consumer a chance to buy the latest models, often only two or three years old, at a big savings over a new car. So, when you buy one, you’re really doing yourself a favor,” says John Davis, host of MotorWeek, the longest running weekly automotive show on television.
More than a third of all late model used cars and trucks sold last year -- nearly 1.2 million vehicles --- came with a Certified Pre-Owned designation. They are typically vehicles that have low mileage, and have been put through a battery of tests to make sure they are in tip-top condition. Vehicles that fall into this category are mostly just off-lease, secured from factory executive car auctions, from rental fleets, or the very best trade-ins.
“A new car depreciates by 15 to 20 percent the moment you drive it off the lot,” says Davis. “If you buy one that’s Certified Pre-Owned, you avoid taking the initial depreciation, yet have an almost new car with a strong warranty and in some cases a better warranty than a new one. Smart consumers can think of these vehicles as the best and brightest in their class.”
According to CNW Marketing Research, Inc., one can expect to pay a premium of between four and seven percent for a vehicle with the Certified Pre-Owned designation. “They may cost a little more than you’d expect to pay for a used car, but when you look at all the checks and balances performed and the extra warranty, it’s easily worth it,” says Davis.
Among the benefits, not just some, but all vehicle parts that are even moderately worn have been replaced. Many Certified Pre-Owned cars come with new brake pads, hoses, accessory belts, wipers and batteries. Their engines and transmissions have been checked and overhauled if necessary; minor exterior damage -- like nicks, dings and tattered trim -- is repaired or replaced; carpets and seat upholstery are shampooed or cleaned, and if they look less than new, are replaced.
Beyond that, certified programs provide additional warranties, often up to 100,000 miles, and may also include perks like car-club style roadside assistance. This kind of warranty actually exceeds the coverage offered by the factory when it was new. “Certification programs increase consumer confidence about the quality of a used vehicle,” says Scott Weitzman, senior director of retail programs for the noted automotive polster, J.D. Power and Associates.
But, don’t just buy any vehicle that is labeled Certified Pre-Owned. The best CPO programs are found only at new car dealers, with repair requirements and warranties backed by the factory. Also, ask to see the checklist on the car or truck of your choice so you will know exactly what has been serviced.
“Simply put, purchasing a Certified Pre-Owned vehicle is really a win-win situation for everyone. Manufacturers make money on vehicles they had in fleets or on lease, dealers increase their income percentage compared to new car sales, and customers walk away feeling better about some of the built-in guarantees,” says Davis.

New Mercedes E-Class Successfully Launched

News from Stuttgart – The new E-Class has gotten off to a very successful start, with more than 40,000 units delivered to customers since the market introduction in spring 2009. Mercedes-Benz expects sales of the new E-Class to receive a further boost in the coming months from the vehicle’s introduction in key markets including the U.S. and China and the launch of the new station wagon in fall 2009.

The new E-Class models have outstanding fuel economy. The sedan’s four- and six-cylinder engines have direct injection systems and consume far less fuel than their predecessors despite their greater output. This month also marked the sales release of two new four-cylinder engines, which combine higher fuel efficiency with the level of driving comfort that is typical of Mercedes-Benz.
The two new units round out the Mercedes-Benz engine range in the business class. The E 200 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY with 100 kW/136 hp consumes 5.2 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers. And the new E 200 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY with direct injection delivers 135 kW/184 hp and consumes only 7.2 liters of gasoline per 100 kilometers. The model program of the sporty coupe also includes two new four-cylinder engines that require significantly less fuel while offering a clear increase of output and torque. The E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY coupe consumes just 5.1 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers while emitting only 135 grams of CO2 per kilometer, which makes it one of the most economical automobiles in its class.
The special characteristics of the new E-Class include not only a high level of environmental friendliness, but also a unique combination of driver assistance systems. Approximately a dozen different assistance systems are available to customers, including new Mercedes-Benz developments such as Lane Keeping Assist, Speed Limit Assist, and Night View Assist. These technologies make the E-Class a “thinking” partner that can not only see, feel, and respond to dangers by means of its “reflexes,” but also act independently to prevent accidents or minimize their effects.
The new E-Class is the successor of an internationally successful Mercedes-Benz model. About 1.5 million sedans and station wagons of that predecessor model, the 211 series, have been delivered to customers since its market launch six years ago. Over the past 60 years, the eight generations of the E-Class sedan have thrilled ten million customers worldwide, making it the most successful business sedan in the world.

Bugatti Veyron Vs Nissan GT-R

What is the difference between ordinary cars and super cars? The Bugatti Veyron can answer that question with this head to head drag race against Nissan GT-R. It is not fair to call GT-R an ordinary car but against a super car like Veyron, it stands no chance in speed and power. In fact these cars are not even in the same league but take a look at the video and see it for yourself. Evo Magazine has organised a race on an air strip for a stand start drag race as well as moving GT-R against parked Veyron. For your information, Veyron does have two more turbo chargers and double the power of GT-R. Video review is presented by ''EVO Magazine''

Audi S4 Tuned by ABT Sportsline - 425 HP

First release we know about, it's the new Audi S4 (2010) with a supercharged V6 engine.
One of the first companies who managed to tune S4 is Abt Sportsline, Germany’s largest VW/Audi tuner and they did not disappoint...

Output has been increased from the stock 333HP to 425HP and torque also gets a significant bump from 325 ft-lbs to 384 ft-lbs. New Audi’s incredible seven-speed DSG gearbox, the sprint to 62 mph (100km/h) takes just 4.6 seconds instead of stock Audi S4 - 5.1 seconds

Official:

  1. ABT Sportsline 2009 – press release CW29
  2. ABT S4 – the sports machine

ABT POWER even makes the already quick Audi S4 faster. Although the V6 compressor with three litre cubic capacity is already very sporty with its 333 HP (245kW), anyone who wants even more dynamism and torque can obtain a super sports car with the ABT S4: the decent-elegant car then brings 435 HP or 320 kW onto the road. And the additional 102 horsepower, which are employed in the ABT S4, suit the car extremely well in terms of nutrition: it achieves 0-100km/h in 4.6 seconds, while in the series standard this takes 5.1 seconds. A half a second difference is an eternity for high-performance vehicles of this kind. The top speed is 282 km/h – and that is 32 km/h more than the Audi S4. This is because the engine, tuned by ABT Sportsline, is, of course, supplied without a V-max limit.

The torque of the engine optimised in Allgäu also appears to be as strong as an ox: instead of 440 Nm now 520 Nm are available – an increase of around 19 percent. As a result the 3.0 TFSI gets to work powerfully in any situation. The extra performance brings additional driving enjoyment and shows its superiority in practically all seven gears of the DSG gearbox. The consumption – and thereby the environmental pollution – is, however, no greater than with the series engine. On the other hand the driving-dynamic difference is revealed on main roads and motorways, as because the ABT S4 does everything even better, it is sportier. Capable of a powerful acceleration to top speed, the six cylinders now get to business. The Allgäu tuner recommends the 4-pipe sports exhaust unit and the ABT AR or BR wheels as fitting supplements to the power image of the car. The smart “round pieces” are available in sizes from 18 to 20 inches and can be supplied with fitting sports tires.

Driving test - hazard perception test

Hazard perception test forms a second section of the theory test and must be passed at the same time. Integrating theoretical hazard perception test training into the practical training sessions will ensure that as competence is achieved in each of the necessary skills, they can be strengthened and applied while you are on the road to increase the road safety benefits.

This part of the theory test requires you to view 14 hazard video clips on the computer screen of approximately one minute each. You are required to watch these clips as if you were the driver. There will be 15 hazard to find - at least one on each clip. However, one clip will have 2 hazard. The hazard perception test clips will not contain any sound.

The clips feature various types of hazard, such as vehicles, pedestrians and road conditions. You should respond by pressing a mouse button as soon as you see a hazard developing that may result in the driver having to take some action, such as changing speed or direction. The earlier the developing hazard is spotted, and a response made, the higher the score. Candidates can score up to five marks on each hazard and the test contains 15 scoreable hazard.

You click either the left or right mouse button whenever you think you can see a hazard developing. The speed at which you click the mouse button as a hazard develops will determine your score for that particular hazard perception clips. You can score between 0 and 5 on each hazard The pass mark for this part of the test is 44 out of 75 (i.e. 15 hazard x 5) for car drivers and motorcycle riders. Those taking LGV or PCV (lorry or bus) tests must score at least 50 out of 75. Candidates are given their results when they have finished both parts of the test and have returned to the waiting room.

Hazard perception test Examination Process

Each hazard perception clip will start with a freeze frame of the start of the video sequence and a count down from 10 will commence. At the end of the count down the clip will start to play and you will be required to click the mouse button each time you see a developing hazard. To let you know that the program has registered your click a red flag will appear on a grey band across the bottom of the screen - one flag for each click you make in any particular clip. At the end of the clip all the flags will be removed before you start the next clip.

An example when to respond

As an example, of how to identify and respond to a developing hazard, consider a parked vehicle on the side of the road. When you first see it, it is not doing anything; it is just a parked vehicle. If you were to respond to the vehicle at this point, you would not score any marks, but you would not lose any marks. However, when you get closer to the vehicle, you notice that the car's right hand indicator starts to flash. The indicator would lead you to believe that the driver of the vehicle has an intention of moving away, therefore the hazard is now developing and a response at this point would score marks.

The indicator coming on is a sign that the parked vehicle has changed its status from a potential hazard into a developing hazard. When you get closer to the vehicle, you will probably see the vehicle start to move away from the side of the road; another response should be made at this point. Different clips in the test will have various signs to indicate that the hazard is changing its status and is now starting to develop.

Hazard perception test scoring mechanism

How the scoring mechanism works ?

Each scoring window is divided into five equal segments and a score of five through to one allocated to each. Those responding in the first segment of the scoring window will score 5 and those in last segment a score of 1. Responses outside the window will score zero.

If you click the mouse while in the first segment (i.e. just as the developing hazard appears) you will obtain the maximum score of 5 points. If you click in the second segment of this window of time you will score 4 points, then 3, then 2 and then in the last segment just 1.This is accurate to one twenty fifth of a second. If you click the mouse button (this is how you inform the computer that you have seen a hazard) too early, before the potential hazard becomes what the DSA term a developing hazard.

Your score will be 0. Therefore to ensure you get a maximum score in the hazard perception test challenge you should fully understand the DSA term developing hazard as opposed to potential hazard. If you click several times during this window of time the computer will always take your highest score and record that for that particular clip.

If you don't click the mouse button in this window of time you will score nothing in respect to that hazard. If lots of unnecessary responses are made in a very short space of time, or throughout the clip, a zero score will recorded for that clip. If this happens a warning message will be shown on the screen at the end of the clip. When the clip ends the screen will turn black for a few seconds before the freeze frame for the next video clip appears and the count down commences again, warning you to get ready. This pattern is repeated until all 14 video clips have been shown.

Click to check how hazard perception test score is calculated

hazard perception test free clips hazard perception test challenge - Hints and tips

Although each clip contains several potential hazard only the one that materializes
into a real hazard (one clip will have 2 hazards) and involves other road users is marked. This is known as a developing hazard. Therefore you will only receive a score if you spot a hazard before it fully materializes and is brought about by the action of another road user. In a few instances it is difficult to determine when a potential hazard becomes a developing hazard and therefore when the scoring window should start.

This is why it is safer to click a few times as you see a hazard develop to make sure you don’t click too early and miss the opening of this window. Recognition of available clues and perception of danger are skills that are necessary in all drivers and riders, irrespective of the vehicle used. For this reason, the same version of the hazard perception test is used for all categories of test.

Look for these hazards
  • pedestrians or cyclists crossing the road
  • vehicles emerging from side roads, parking places or driveways
  • large vehicles moving over to your side of the road
  • meeting oncoming vehicles on narrow roads or where other obstructions or slow moving vehicles make the road narrow
  • loose pets and farmyard animals
  • changes in the traffic movement and volume
  • junctions and roundabouts
  • horse riders
  • weather conditions of the day

Bugatti EB 110 Crash During Bavaria Moscow City Racing

Bugatti EB110, the model shown in the video here crashed in Moscow. The car, one of only 139 ever produced, crashed into a cement gutter and embankment on the side of the road during the Bavaria Moscow City Racing 2009 event.

At 25-second mark you will see the rear passenger wheel snap off and fly up into the air. The rear bumper looks to have been partially torn off, which also forced open one of the scissors-doors.

The EB110 was built to celebrate the 110th birthdate of Ettore Bugatti, and is the predecessor to the Veyron. The four-wheel drive car features a mid-engined 3.5-liter quad-turbo V12 that produces up to 542 horsepower. It has a 0-100 km/h time of 3.4 seconds, and a 343 km/h (213 mph) top speed. A year after its 1991 debut, Bugatti released a SuperSport model that shaved the 0-100 km/h time by 0.2 seconds, while increasing the top speed to 348 km/h (216 mph). The SS debuted at $350,000.

According to newspaper the accident took place during the second supercar parade. Behind the wheel was a Russian man with a "supermodel girlfriend" sitting in the passenger seat. Both seemed to be undamaged physically, but the destruction of a $2 million car likely caused some emotional damage.

Car Insurance Quotes Made Easy

The car insurance market can appear complicated to potential consumers, not least with the sheer amount of possible providers available. However, there are tools at your disposal and steps which can be taken to ensure the competitive market is used to your advantage in obtaining a competitive car insurance quote.

First of all, you should be conscious of some of the basic factors which most car insurance providers base their quotes on.

Personal factors such as where you live and how old you are; Security of the car. If your car can be kept in a garage over night and is fitted with a security device such as an immobiliser then the chance of theft is reduced; Paying the policy up front. Monthly payments can add considerably more to the cost of the policy, although are often seen as a much easier way to pay; Increasing the excess on your policy. This shifts more of the financial risk from the insurance provider to you for minor claims; Reducing your miles per year

There are also different types of car insurance available and choosing the correct one to suit your needs is important. The most commonly recommended policy is fully comprehensive, which insures you and your vehicle against an accident or theft. The factors listed, including your personal circumstances and type of car, will ultimately have a bearing on the cost of the policy.

Other forms of insurance are termed third party. These policies are often cheaper but the level of cover is very basic. This can include fire and theft, but it is important to remember that it will not cover you for damages to your vehicle if involved in an accident.

Once you have considered the personal circumstances of your cover, and are clear of the factors which influence the cost of car insurance, one of the best ways to compare car insurance is via online comparison websites. Typically, such online comparison sites will search numerous car insurance providers with your given details, and will return a range of policy options.

In addition, online comparison sites will not only offer you access to some of the most competitive car insurance policies on the market, but they can also provide a clear indication of what factors are influencing the cost of your policy.

Indeed, using such tools and understanding what factors can increase or decrease the cost of your policy can go a long way in obtaining the best car insurance quote.
